Astrology Basics: the Outer Planets
Because birth chart readings are expensive. Today we talk about the outer planets.
Just a quick one today. We’re finally talking outer planets: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto! These are planets that were discovered later with advancements in technology and were assigned meaning and sign rulership. They have a much slower orbit and therefore are considered generational planets. This means you really don’t feel the impact of them to harshly which is why I personally use traditional rulership. I will cover how to work with them as a chart ruler later. Nevertheless I still want you to be armed with the knowledge them though so here we go!
These planets each branch out from other planetary themes according to the sign they take over. Domicile Mars in Scorpio becomes Pluto, Saturn domicile in Aquarius becomes Uranus, and Pisces domicile in Jupiter becomes Neptune. Here’s a recap of the traditional rulership information for reference if you should need it.
And now the outer planets in a nifty list.
Uranus
Dignities:
Domicile: Aquarius
Detriment: Leo
Exalted: Scorpio
Fall: Taurus
Signs Associated: Aquarius
When Planet was discovered/added to Astrology: 1781
Themes of Sign Houses: 11th house, innovation, friendship, rebellion.
Themes of Planets: Social/humanitarian progress, technology, innovative thinking
Generational Planetary Meaning: this is how your generation makes a mark on the world that changes things such as when Uranus was in Capricorn from 1988-1995 and we saw the creation and foundations for computers and the internet. Then when domicile in Aquarius from 1995-2003 and we saw the mass utilization of the internet and its impacts on society that are still being innovated from today. Uranus spends roughly 7 years in each zodiac sign.
Key Differences From Traditional Rulership: unlike with Saturn, Uranus is associated with fast paced change and rejection of societal norms.
Working with it: You really have to embrace our authenticity when working with this as a personal planet. This is really a trial by fire type of thing though. Much like Saturn if it isn’t authentic and doesn’t serve you you’ll know right away.
Neptune
Dignities:
Domicile: Pisces
Detriment:Virgo
Exalted: Leo*
Fall: Aquarius
Signs Associated: Pisces
When Planet was discovered/added to Astrology: 1846
Themes of Sign Houses: 12th House. Deep rooted spiritual beliefs, unknown enemies, self undoing
Themes of Planets: mysticism, illusion, spirituality
Generational Planetary Meaning: literally the collective hopes and dreams of the generation as well as cultural movements. When Neptune was in Sagittarius from 1970-1984 we saw that unchecked Jupiter ruled Sagittarius with the delusions of Neptune give us the sex, drugs and rock and roll feel the era was known for. Neptune spends about 14 years in each sign.
Key Differences From Traditional Rulership: Jupiter is a little more restrained in its expression opposed to Neptune. Neptune fully delves into the all consuming nature of Pisces.
Working with it: This is all about discernment when working with it as a personal planet. Its fully embracing and trusting your intuition and learning to release what doesnt’ belong to you whether that be beliefs, others perceptions and emotions, or ideas.
Pluto
Dignities:
Domicile: Scorpio
Detriment: Taurus
Exalted: Aries*
Fall: Libra
Signs Associated: Scorpio
When Planet was discovered/added to Astrology: 1930
Themes of Sign Houses: 8th House. Shared resources, power, secrets, regeneration
Themes of Planets: visible transformation
Generational Planetary Meaning: This is our evolution as a society and dynamics you will see evolve most in your lifetime. This planet spends anywhere between 12-31 years in each sign. Pluto is currently in Aquarius and the last time it was in Aquarius the American Revolution was happening for context.
Key Differences From Traditional Rulership: this is really digging fully into your psyche and requires more constant action oriented changes to see the long term effects.
Working with it: accepting loss as part of change and growth is a huge thing when working with Pluto as a personal planet.
*These are not always accepted as they are modern interpretation but I just wanted you to be aware.
Once again, we get to reading charts I will address more in depth working with these as chart rulers but for now this should get you on your way to understanding modern rulerships. I hope this was helpful.
